What Is The Scorm Compliant Learning Management System?

Scorm means Sharable Content Object Reference Model and it has become the standard for the tracking of records in learning management systems. It is based on previous standards that have been set by the AICC which is the Aviation Industry CBT Committee.

The benefits of using Scorm in the Scorm compliant learning management system is that the Scorm content can communicate with any LMS or learning management system that uses the standardized method based on Javascript. This allows you to be able to go with any LMS that supports Scorm and choose exactly the course titles that you want.

The Scorm compliant learning management system allows a company to customize their learning management system to the needs of the company. There are many learning management systems that have course titles that cannot be customized. If you acquire their learning management system, then you have to use their course titles. But using a Scorm compliant learning management system allows the company to pick and choose what vendor or vendors they would like to use in order to get just the course work that their company needs.

To put the meaning of the Scorm compliant learning management system in simple terms, you can think of Scorm as a VHS tape. The VHS tells the standard of the video tape as the Scorm tells the standard for the learning management system. The VHS specifies the standard size for a video tape and how fast the VCR should spin the reels as the Scorm tells the technical specifications for creating e-learning. You can put any kind of video on the VHS tape such as horror, comedy, romance, etc. just as the Scorm compliant learning management system allows you to use or create any kind of learning content.

The Scorm compliant learning management system was developed in the year 2000 by ADL which is the US Department of Defense. There are three versions of the Scorm compliant learning management system so far. These are Scorm 1.1 which was the first trial but has never really been accepted. Then, Scorm 1.2 was developed and it solved many problems that the first one had and is the most widely version used and most LMS content vendors support this version. Scorm 1.3 was developed in 2004 and adds a sequencing and navigation factor but is still being accepted slowly.
